Summary: Hackers obtained more personal profiles in 2008 than in the previous four years-combined. The Verizon Wireless study found that approximately 90 percent of cases could have been avoided with basic security measures. In corporate cases, many hackers entered the system through a low-level employee who didn't have access to high profile items, but whose security walls were set much lower. Once they had their toe in the businesses door, they could work their way up to more classified documents. Additionally, the study found that 93 percent of all compromised records came from the financial sector. Furthermore, because criminals are becoming more sophisticated, the data breaches are becoming much more severe and economically taxing.
